ISO/IEC 42001:2023 – First Certifications and Market Development for AI Management

Find out how ISO/IEC 42001:2023 is shaping the AI certification market (AIMS). We present the latest certifications, certification bodies, websites, and trends in the implementation and certification of AIMS.

ISO/IEC 42001:2023 – First Certifications and Market Development for AI Management

In an era of dynamic artificial intelligence (AI) development, coupled with growing regulatory and social expectations, organizations worldwide are seeking frameworks to ensure responsible, secure, and compliant management of AI systems. ISO/IEC 42001:2023 addresses these needs by establishing requirements for AI Management Systems (AIMS). Since its publication in December 2023, there has been growing interest in certification aligned with this standard, both in the private and public sectors.

What is ISO/IEC 42001:2023?

ISO/IEC 42001:2023 is the first international standard defining requirements for AI Management Systems (AIMS). Its aim is to ensure that organizations design, implement, and monitor AI systems ethically, transparently, and in compliance with applicable regulations. The standard emphasizes:

  • Risk and impact assessment of AI systems
  • AI system lifecycle management
  • Data security and privacy
  • Transparency and accountability in AI operations
  • Continuous improvement of AI-related processes

By implementing ISO/IEC 42001, organizations can not only meet regulatory requirements but also build trust among stakeholders and customers.

The Importance of ISO/IEC 42001 Certification

Certification according to ISO/IEC 42001 confirms that an organization has implemented an effective AI Management System that meets international standards. For many companies, this is not just a matter of compliance but also a strategic element for building competitive advantage and a reputation as a leader in responsible AI use.

European Perspective: Challenges and Potential

According to recent Eurostat data, in 2024, 13.5 % of EU enterprises (with at least 10 employees) used at least one AI technology—up from 8 % in 2023. Among large enterprises (+250 employees), this share rises to 41.2 %.

Country-level figures for 2024 show adoption rates ranging from 3.1 % (Romania) to 27.6 % (Denmark), with Poland at 5.9 %, placing it among the lowest EU countries for AI use euronews.com.

While this suggests limited adoption in some regions, the rapid EU-wide growth-from 8 % to 13.5 % in just one year reveals significant market potential. Countries like Poland, Bulgaria, and Romania currently below EU average stand to gain in competitiveness, compliance, and data security by implementing robust AI Management Systems (AIMS).

Conferences such as those organized by the Polish Committee for Standardization have highlighted a growing awareness of responsible AI, emphasizing standards such as:

  • ISO/IEC 42001 – AI Management Systems
  • ISO/IEC 27001 and 27701 – Information Security and Privacy Protection

Leading European Countries by AI Adoption (2024)

  • Denmark – 27.6 %
  • Sweden – 25.1 %
  • Belgium – 24.7 %

Countries with Lowest AI Adoption

  • Romania – 3.1 %
  • Poland – 5.9 %
  • Bulgaria – 6.5 %

The Issue of Translating ISO/IEC 42001 into Local Languages

An important aspect for companies across Europe is the availability of standards in their native language. According to information shared during the conference organized by the Polish Committee for Standardization (source: Łukasz Kowalski’s LinkedIn post, 1977 views), although ISO/IEC 42001 was considered among the first standards to be translated into Polish, there are currently no plans for its publication in Polish. This is because the standard has not yet been adopted as a European standard (EN). As a result, companies in Poland — and potentially in other European countries — must currently rely on the English version of the standard.

Inference:
This situation in Poland is likely mirrored in other non-English-speaking countries, where the lack of a local language version of ISO/IEC 42001 could impede effective adoption and understanding of the standard. Therefore, international standardization bodies should consider coordinating translations into national languages to support companies worldwide in responsible AI management.
